New England has some of the oldest and most decrepit housing in the country, with more than twice the national rate of homes built before 1940. In addition, the New England percentage of homes with severe physical problems is twice that of the U.S, with higher rates of mice activity, leaks from outside, and roofing, siding, and foundation problems in 2007.

The Healthy Housing Committee works with governments, organizations, community health centers, and other individuals around the state to improve the quality of the indoor home environment to reduce factors that cause and/or exacerbate asthma.

The Healthy Housing Committee meets every other month for one-hour remote sessions.

  • The MA CHW Learning Community for Asthma, organized by MAAP, launched on October 6, 2022. It supported continuing education, peer learning, and networking opportunities for CHWs providing asthma care and/or asthma home visiting. Our program featured a group of 20+ CHWs who participated together, and took place over a span of six bi-weekly sessions, ending December 15th, 2022.

Preference was given to CHWs serving residents from the following communities, most burdened by asthma in MA: Boston, Brockton, Chelsea, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, New Bedford, Southbridge, Springfield, and Worcester.

These sessions were sponsored by The Asthma Prevention and Control Program at the MA Department of Public Health and co-facilitated by Carla Caraballo, a longstanding CHW working on asthma.
